Online record keeping! Track how many books you read this summer online here.  (When you’re prompted for a User Name and Password, just create your own.)

What’s the same?

Lots of fun programs for you! Performers, movies   — a Hunger Games Marathon —  and science exploration are waiting for you this summer! Paper reading records are still available at the Children’s Desk, if you prefer to track books on paper. Free books, prize coupons, and raffle tickets for all teens who return their reading record to GPL or record their reading online by Saturday, August 9.

Drop-in Card Gaming

Thursdays, July 10, 17, 24, 31 & August 7 @ 11 am
Bring your Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! or other cards for a fun hour playing and sharing strategies. Come with a friend or make a new one. Tweens and teens are welcome.

ALTSCHULE-HowardWeather Program with “Hurricane Howie” Altschule

Tuesday, July 15 @ 11 am
Former TV Meteorologist (WNYT), and now Forensic Meteorologist, Howard Altschule will give a presentation on everything from Guilderland’s weather patterns to cold fronts, warm fronts, hail, and tornadoes. He will use some of the latest technology to explain that day’s weather, and then discuss the kinds of jobs are available in meteorology.

Teen Arm Knitting

Tuesday, July 15 @ 3 pm
Come learn how to knit without needles! In this program, each teen will learn how to Arm Knit an infinity scarf that they will be able to take home! This program is for all teens in grades 7 – 12. Please register ahead of time for this program so we can ensure we have enough yarn for you! Registered program; sign up here.

Ink-Vention: Creative Writing Workshop for Teens

Tuesday, July 22 @ 3 pm, and Thursday, July 31 @ 3 pm
This creative writing workshop for teens is intended to encourage their creativity, inspire their imagination, and develop their writing skills. You’ll attend BOTH dates.  For ages 13 – 16.  Registered program; sign up here.

The Hunger Games and Catching Fire Movie Marathon

Friday, July 25: The Hunger Games at Noon, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at 2:45 pm

Join us for a movie marathon and see if the odds are ever in our favor.

In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. This is the struggle to survive… PG-13

The saga continues in Catching Fire, the sequel that finds a revolution brewing as the winners of the Hunger Games take a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts, while the president plots their downfall. PG-13

To satisfy your hunger, pizza will be served about 1 pm.

Teen Wii Just Dance Summer Party

Teens in grades 7 – 12! Come join us for a summer dance party using the popular Wii Just Dance games on the big screen! You will get to hang and enjoy some fun activities and crafts while you rest your dancing feet. Basebology 101: Science on the Ball Field

Thursday, August 7 @ 2 pm
Step out of the dugout and up to the plate as the Baseball Hall of Fame delivers a lively look at science on the sandlot. In this unit, you’ll use baseballs to demonstrate basic principles of physics. You’ll explore how force, gravity, inertia, and acceleration affect a Major League player’s performance.

Monday thru Thursday, June 30 thru July 3
Use QR (quick response) codes to locate a trove of “treasures” throughout the Guilderland Public Library! Teens and tweens who successfully complete the treasure hunt from June 30 through July 3 will be entered into a drawing for a great prize. No registration required, just stop by with your smart phone! No smart phone, no problem: Borrow one of the library’s iPads to participate.

Book Buddies Training!

Monday, June 30 @ 2 pm, or Tuesday, July 1 @ 2 pm

Do you enjoy working with children, or need to earn some volunteer hours this summer? Interested in adding activities to your college applications? GPL is looking for teens entering grades 7 – 12 who can help a child in grades 1 – 4 with reading skills.

The program runs July 9 – 31 on Wednesdays from 10:30 am – noon and Thursdays from 3 pm – 5 pm.  Attendance at ONE training session is MANDATORY.  Call 456-2400 x 4 to reserve your training spot.
