Guilderland Library Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Library. It is the Foundation that underwrites many of the programs and services that make the Guilderland Public Library such an important part of the community. It is the Foundation that, in the past, upgraded the Library's Young Adult area, created the ever-popular Community Literary Garden, and underwrites the Carol J. Hamblin Notable Authors Speakers Series that has hosted Joyce Carol Oates, Jeff Shaara, Joseph E. Persico, Paul Grondahl, Gregory Maguire, Tim Green, Ela Stein Weissberger, Will Moses, New Yorker magazine Cartoon Editor Bob Mankoff, and most recently Lincoln historian and author Harold Holzer.
History of the Foundation Since its inception in 2001, the Foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from government, corporate and individual sources, all of which has been given directly to the Library for its programs and improvements. Initial financial support was first raised through a farewell dinner for the retiring Carol J. Hamblin, the long-time director of the Library. These funds were used to establish the Carol J. Hamblin Notable Author Speaker Series, which brings distinguished authors to the Library to read from and discuss their literary works with the public. Funds have also been used to upgrade the Young Adult area in the Library, purchase a TTY machine for the use of the speech and hearing impaired, upgrade the meeting room sound system, create the Community Literary Garden, and match funds for upgrading the public restrooms for improved handicapped accessibility. Contributions to the Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Donation to named funds, for example the Carol J. Hamblin Notable Authors Speakers Series, which are dedicated to support a particular initiative, can also be made. Individual donations, planned gifts, stock transfers, foundation grants and corporate sponsorships are all welcome. Major gifts to the Foundation will be acknowledged in a permanent and public display at the Library. If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation, either of cash or stocks, please do not hesitate to contact the Foundation at 456-2400 ext. 12, or by writing to the Guilderland Library Foundation, 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland, NY 12084. You can e-mail the foundation at foundation@guilpl.org Community Literary Garden One of the Foundation's most visible and lasting accomplishments was the Library's Community Literary Garden, which was completed in 2006. Funded in large part by tax-deductible donations from individuals and businesses to help fund the completion of the garden. Donations will help fund the construction and landscaping of the garden, and such amenities as a fountain, trellis, outdoor lighting and sound system, teak chairs, tables and benches and an amphitheatre
