Quadricentennial Events

Much of the focus of the Quadricentennial is on Henry Hudson and his voyage up to what is now Albany. But let us not forget the contributions made by Samuel de Champlain whose goal of establishing a French colony in America had far-reaching effects. And so we present these enlightening programs.

Meet Samuel de Champlain and his wife, Hélène Boullé
Sunday, October 25, 2 pm

Enjoy an afternoon with the explorer and his wife and learn how they poured their energies and talents into the establishment of French settlements in North America. Hear about Champlain’s adventures as a mariner and cartographer and find out about how his efforts resulted in a continuing French presence in North America. French Professor David Graham and his québécoise wife, Louise Pilon, become the Champlains in this entertaining and informative program appropriate for all ages.

This program made possible by a grant from the Upper Hudson Library System.

The Continuing French Presence in the Hudson ValleyExplore NY 400

Long after French explorers and settlers followed trade routes through New York and beyond, traces of French culture can still be found in the Hudson Valley.  Two programs explore how and why this is so. Both these programs have been recorded and are available for circulation. This program is supported by the Explore New York Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission.

A Brief History of the French in North America
Many people in the Capital Region share common ancestry with early settlers of New France.  Dr. Eloise Brière, professor of French at the University at Albany, provides a capsule history of French exploration in the Northeast from the earliest settlers to you or your neighbors and explains how the French presence persists in our area.

The French Language as it Persists in the Northeast Today
Every wondered why French sounds different in Montreal than in Paris? Dr. Cynthia Fox, professor of French at the University at Albany, explains the differences in the French language as it is spoken in France and as it continues to be spoken even in our own area, showing its roots in 17th century speech.
